Scout Strong and be MedWiseThe Redwood Empire Council’s Enterprise Risk Management Committee would like to inform you about an educational program that we feel is imperative to the Safety of all Scouts. The MedWise award is under the SCOUTStrong Healthy Living Initiative. The self-paced interactive lesson plans developed by the Boy Scouts of America and the National Council on Patient Information and Education (NCPIE) provide valuable lessons on the safe and responsible use of medicines. Why was this program developed? Studies indicate that about 10,000 children and teens are seen in emergency rooms yearly because of errors made in the self-medication of OTC medicines alone. The Risk Management Committee would like to see every Den, Troop, Venture Team, and Crew review the curriculum, complete the exercises their scouts, and then print your certificates and order a patch for each participant.
The lessons are designed for all ages in the BSA on the importance of knowing safe and responsible use of medicines. The lessons plans also relate very well with the Medicine, Safety, Family Life, and First Aid Merit Badges.
