Multi-county fires emergency affects Scouting familiesOur Redwood Empire Council BSA leaders have been responding to numerous phone calls and messages. We have learned that many volunteer Scouters, at least one BSA staff member, and dozens of Scout families have lost their homes and possessions to one of the fires in Sonoma, Napa, Mendocino, and Lake Counties. Others may be out of work with the destruction of local businesses as well. At a special Council Activities and Civic Service meeting held Thursday, October 12, council, district, and unit began planning our community service efforts as part of the post-fire recovery effort. A list of recommended service projects is being compiled, with key volunteer contact information, so that we can support each other in council-wide, district-wide, and multi-unit efforts. Scouters who wish to help our council fund replacement uniforms and badges for those displaced REC Scouts and Scouters who lost their uniforms when their homes burned down may do to our Online Donations page to make a special contribution towards this effort. More information is coming regarding specific initiatives within our council. We will update this article as we know more.
