Fall Ordeal

Orca Lodge will be holding its Fall Ordeal October 24-26 at Camp Navarro. The Northwest Stewards thoroughly appreciated what the Lodge has accomplished for them at our recent Ordeals and it continues to give Orca a wonderful site for its Ordeals and ceremonies.

If you have not been up to Camp Navarro in a while, why not plan on getting away for the fellowship and service that only an Ordeal can give you. Some of us enjoy working on the Ceremonies side of things (there is always room for new faces and more help). Others enjoy working directly with new members in the Elangomat program. Of course there is always room in the kitchen. There are plenty of work projects to dig into. So, do not leave your tool box, digging tools, and grass trimmers at home bring them and put them to use.

Over the last few years, Orca Lodge has been growing, and we are expecting to continue that growth in new members fall and we look forward to welcoming many new Brotherhood members into the lodge during the weekend. Whether you completed your Ordeal last year and are now a Brotherhood Eligible member, or if you completed your Ordeal thirty years ago, the Ordeal is an event for everyone to participate in. There is work to be done, fellowship around every corner, and lasting memories to be made. Make sure that you do not miss out on making the Ordeal a memorable experience for all our new brothers! All in all, the Ordeal offers something for everyone.

The price includes food and lodging for the weekend. Remember, your Dues ($15) must be current for 2014 to attend OA events. Register now and we will let you know if you are not current with our dues. So fill out the Registration form below and get out to Camp Navarro.

Conclave 2014

The 2014 W3-N Conclave at the Solano County fairgrounds was one of the biggest and best Conclaves I have ever been to.  The events and activities on Saturday afternoon entertained hundreds of arrowmen with activities ranging from trivia games to inflatable boxing and sumo wrestling  Orca lodge represented by contributing four booths to the midway including a widely enjoyed game of water pong, where participants bounced a whiffle ball into a cup of water to win a prize.  Our own Lodge Chief, Jacob Smith, even went a few rounds in the Section dunk tank.  The food at Conclave was fantastic and key note speaker at Saturday night’s dinner gave a truly inspiring speech.

With the conclusion of a truly great Conclave Ican only hope that the centennial year Conclave we host at the Sonoma Raceway will exceed this year’s Conclave in every aspect.  There is your challenge Orca Lodge, let’s make it happen!

-Austin Leonard, Lodge Vice Chief

ps:  Congratulations to our newest Brotherhood members:

Chiefs Corner

Hello Brothers!  There is so much I would like to say to you, yet so little space to say it in!  First off, we had a BRILLIANT Conclave and I thank all of you who came out to enjoy the festivities.  There was everything from Native American dancing to dunk tanks.  And while this year was great, keep in mind that we will be hosting next year so it is up to us to but on another magnificent event!  Anyone interested in staffing next year or being part of the planning, email me!  Upcoming events include our Fall Ordeal and our Lodge Dinner/Officer Elections.  Please come out to help with the Ordeal, either through ceremonies, service or just hanging out.    I would really appreciate any support as we welcome new members into our ranks.  As usual, this time of year includes our Lodge Dinner where we elect our Lodge officers for next year.  If you are interested I would recommend having a regular attendance at meeting and talking to the current Lodge officer whose position you want to fill.  No applications are needed to run, just a nomination by one of your fellow brothers.  Nominations open during the LEC meeting before the dinner so I suggest going to the LEC meeting before-hand.  This will also help you be updated on all the official things going on in the Lodge.  Well, I think I have talked enough for now.  If you have any questions feel free to email or call me!

Jacob Smith ,
Orca Lodge Chief

Advisers Minute

It’s hard to believe that we are already 2/3 of the way thru 2014.  It has been a whirlwind.  I hope you have all had time to enjoy some good Scouting events this year.

First off, I want to congratulate Ethan and Jacob for attending OA Trail Crew at Philmont.  Over the next months, we should be hearing from both of them about their experience.

At the beginning of the year, the Key 3 met to come up with our goals for the year.  I want to report that we are making good progress on all of these goals.  Some of these we have exceeded by a huge amount (Conclave attendance).

I know that there is a lot of excitement on some great programs that we are going to be working on in 2015.

  • First will be NOAC, which we currently have 24 members of the Lodge attending plus another 6 on staff.
  • Second, we will be the Host Lodge of the 2015 Section Conclave, being held at Sonoma Raceway. This should be an even more spectacular Conclave than the one we just attended.

Jason Kracht
Lodge Adviser

Officer Elections 2015

Elections for our 4 Lodge officers will be held at the 2014 Lodge dinner.  The officers of the Lodge are the Lodge Chief, Lodge Vice-Chief, Lodge Secretary, and Lodge Treasurer. All Lodge officers must be under twenty-one (21) years old during their entire term in office.

If you are interested in running for one of the Lodge Officer positions, please contact Mr. Kracht.  You should also attend the Lodge Executive Committee meeting the afternoon before the Lodge Dinner.

Being a Lodge Officer is a great job, which has a lot of personal reward, but takes commitment to ensuring the success of the Lodge

Chapter Happenings

Wonkatonk

After wrapping up a pretty fun and busy summer with conclave the Wonk-a-tonk chapter is ready to keep having fun and to do more! We would like to get a permanent ceremonies team and make some new regalia. Also we are going to learn traditional Native American  dances and hope to get a dance team too!

This spring we will be hosting another LNT training for those of you who didn't make the first one, and those of you who want to do it again and for anyone else who want s to come. It's a lot of fun and for those of you debating about going, go! Also we are always available for visits to Troops and Cub Packs for LNT demonstrations.

Next year Orca Lodge is hosting Conclave at Sonoma Raceway During an Indy Car Race, yes that's right there will be an Indy Car race DURING Conclave! It will also be the 100th anniversary of the OA. We plan on making it the biggest Conclave in Section W3N history as well as the most memorable, meaning we need your help to plan it and show up! I challenge you to help make it the best Conclave ever!

Don't forget about the upcoming Ordeal in the fall where we will be inducting new members. those of you who are eligible for brotherhood this is the time for you to prepare to receive that honor. Hope to see you there!

Also I would like to congratulate all of those who received the Brotherhood honor at Conclave! Good Job Guys! Keep up the good work!

Yours in Brotherhood,

John Kulczewski Wonk-a-tonk Chapter Chief

Veterans Service

Flags for the Veteran’s Luncheon

Once again the Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs of Santa Rosa are hosting a Tribute to the Veterans Luncheon.  It has been Wonkatonk Chapter’s honor to participate with this local community event by placing flags in front of the Santa Rosa Veterans Building early in the morning before the luncheon.

Come and join us Thursday, November 6th, at 6:30 AM at the Vets Building in Santa Rosa (1351 Maple Avenue).  It will only take 45-60 minutes of your day.  Street Clothes are fine since we all have to get back to school or work.  Keep in mind that they have made donations to the lodge the past couple years recognizing Orca Lodges dedication to community service.

Jim Wieschendoff has been our contact for this event over the years.  If I may quote him, “A huge thank you and the Order of the Arrow Scouts for your participation.  It means a lot to all of us!  It is a great organization.

Mark this date on your calendars. Get out of bed, a come join us on November 6th and give back to your community.  It’s the right thing to do.

NOAC 2015 - Centuries of Service

NOAC 2015NOAC 2015 celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Order of the Arrow and takes place from August 3-8, 2015 in East Lansing, Michigan (on the campus of Michigan State University). In addition to the scheduled activities, the Orca Lodge contingent will be touring other venues in the Detroit area. The current plan is to leave the Bay Area late Friday, July 31, 2015, or early August 1, and includes a day at The Henry Ford Museum, and another day at Greenfield Village. Henry Ford was a novel inventor and an early pioneer in the automobile industry, though his interests went far beyond just building cars. His collections of airplanes and other forms of transportation are on par with the Smithsonian. Greenfield Village presents many authentic historical buildings laid out in a park-like setting including Thomas Edison’s factory and the Wright Brother’s cycle shop. You can check out both these venues at www.thehenryford.orgExternal Link.

Currently we have 23 spots reserved for this event and have another 6 on the waiting list.  If you are not signed up yet, but still want to go, please email noac@orca194.org to get put on the waiting list.  The waiting list is closing soon, please contact us ASAP.

Mr. Bleibaum

Arrowman Service Award

Starting on the 99th anniversary of the Order of the Arrow’s founding, registered members in good standing with the BSA, their local council and their Order of the Arrow lodge will be able to commemorate our organization’s centennial by working to complete the Arrowman Service Award. This award, which some are referring to as “the sash patch,” will be recognized as one of the few patches that have ever been approved by the national Order of the Arrow committee to be worn on an OA sash.

The purpose of the Arrowman Service Award (ASA) is to encourage Arrowmen to recommit themselves to the ideals of the Order, increase their level of service to their local Unit and Council, and participate in the 100th anniversary celebration of the OA. The award will have three categories of criteria with various requirements that Arrowmen can complete. These include components on personal growth, service to Scouting, and participation in the centennial celebration.

Breakdown of the Three Categories

The category on Personal Growth will challenge both youth (OA members through age 20) and adult (OA members ages 21 and older) Arrowmen to advance their own leadership skills by participating in or staffing a BSA training course. In tandem with “recommitting themselves to the ideals of the Order,” this category also encourages each member to seal the bond of Brotherhood membership (if eligible), among other BSA advancement opportunities.

The category on Scout Service advocates for Arrowmen to go above and beyond the traditional call to service and serve in a variety of leadership positions at the Unit, Council, Lodge and National levels. This includes service benefiting the local community, the local BSA council or camp, or public lands such as a National Forest or Park.

The category on Centennial Events correlates with the national Order of the Arrow committee’s objective to redouble service and programmatic offerings for the 100th anniversary. The youth and adult Arrowmen requirements for this category are the same, and include attendance at your section’s 100th anniversary conclave, your lodge’s sponsored 100th anniversary event, an ArrowTour event, and the 2015 National Order of the Arrow Conference.

Logistics and Process for Fulfilling the Award

Arrowmen can commence working on requirements on July 16th, 2014 and continue working towards its completion through December 31st, 2015.  All Arrowmen are encouraged to work towards the fulfillment of the ASA.

Lodge Dinner

Orca Lodge will hold the Lodge Dinner on Saturday, November 15th. The dinner will be held at the Presbyterian Church of the Roses at 2500 Patio Court, Santa Rosa. The evening will begin with a social hour starting at 5 P.M. Dinner will be served at 6 P.M. and will be prepared by our very own Rich Hatch and his superior crew. At the present time we are not sure of the exact menu, but most assuredly, no one will be leaving hungry!

After dinner, around 7 P.M., will be when the evening will begin to roll. This is when we hold our yearly youth officer elections, hand out our recognition awards(Silver Flukes, Founders Award, James E. West , etc.) and wind up the evening by announcing our new Vigil Candidates. Everything should be completed by 8:30 P. M.

This year the Lodge Executive Committee meeting will be held the afternoon before the Lodge Dinner. Nomination for Youth Officers will be opened at the Lodge meeting and will remain open through the Lodge Dinner.

The cost is only $30 for Arrowmen (includes $15 dues for 2015). For non-members the dinner will be $15, and for children ten years old and under, $10. This is not an exclusive Lodge event. Be sure to bring your family and friends, it is important. It is going to be an exciting time.
