Section W-3N Conclave

Brendan S. - Section W-3N Vice Chief

In 2016 Conclave saw itself at Solano County Fairgrounds. In 2017 we are taking it back to its roots, Scout Camp. Next month the beautiful Camp Lassen, located north of Chico, will host our Section W-3N Conclave, and 500 arrowmen from across Northern California and Nevada. Take this opportunity to not only meet some of those arrowmen, but also to enjoy all of the fantastic program opportunities. Sign up today to reserve your spot at the rifle range, mountain biking track, shotgun range, choker construction class, Camp Lassen's very own ATV course, and so much more.

There is something for every arrowman, even those brand new to our order. Conclave 2017 is your conclave, your way. During registration you get to select classes that you are most interested in; then on Saturday afternoon, go back and check out anything you might have missed or just want more time to do. Field sports, carnival games, maybe even a live concert, come see all this and more from Friday, September 15 to Sunday, September 17. Make sure to sign up soon so you can get access to all the programs you want to take advantage of.

Fall Induction

We will be holding our Fall Induction weekend September 29 - October 1 at Camp Royaneh. The Lodge has been growing the last couple of years, and our Ordeal numbers have been growing as well. Your help with these events is critical if we are to make this a meaningful experience for these candidates.

The cost for this event for members will be $25.00, which includes your meals. Departure time on Sunday will be around 9 AM.

Every youth and adult will need to bring their Annual BSA Health and Medical RecordExternal Link with at least Part A and B completed. These forms should be picked up when you check out. Forms may be found on the Redwood Council Web site.

In addition to the normal Induction weekend activities, we will be holding the Lodge Vigil Ceremony this weekend as well.

The members of our Lodge who have been selected to receive the highest honor in the Order of the Arrow, the Vigil Honor will be revealed at the W-3N Section Conclave at Camp Lassen. I encourage all Vigil Honor members to attend both the Section Conclave & the Induction weekend to help honor these deserving Arrowmen.

Please complete your registration no later than the Monday before the Induction weekend so that we can make proper plans.

I challenge each of you to attend the Fall Induction weekend. It is a great occasion to welcome our new members.

If you have any questions please contact Lodge Adviser Jason Kracht via email adviser@orca194.org.

Remember: You must register by Monday Sept 24 for the Induction Weekend!

Fall Fellowship

Brendan S. - Past Lodge Chief

Join us this fall, Nov 11th, for an Orca Lodge fellowship. We are putting together a fun filled day outing to give you the opportunity to bond with your fellow Lodge members. Currently we are looking to have a Lodge shoot at Ryan's ranch, so keep your eyes peeled for details to come.

Take the chance to meet Arrowmen from our other chapters in the relaxed setting of gunfire and flying arrows. Please let us know if you are interested in attending or in helping in getting the fellowship put together please contact: pastchief@orca194.org

2018 National Order of the Arrow Conference

The National Order of the Arrow Conference (NOAC) is the premier event of the Order of the Arrow, and is Scouting's second-largest national event. NOAC is officially less than one year away.  In 2018, approximately 8,000 Arrowmen from across our nation are expected to gather at Indiana University from July 30 - August 4, 2018, at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN to partake in fellowship, training and shows.

Orca Lodge has been allocated 13 slots (10 youth & 3 adults) for participation at NOAC 2018. If you are interested in attending this event, please contact the Lodge Chief and Lodge Adviser by Conclave.  The Orca NOAC committee is still working on our budget for next year's conference, but plan for the cost to be around $1500.

A "teaser trailer" for NOAC can be found here on YouTubeExternal Link.

Fellowship @ Noyo

Tyler W. - Lodge Chief

This summer Orca Lodge had a a large presence at the Webelos Weekend at camp Noyo. We had many Arrowmen working hard on staff to support this event. There was a member of our lodge from areas such as waterfront, to archery, to nature. They all worked very hard to put on such an amazing event. As well as staffing the camp, our Arrowmen also put on a ceremony to open the closing camp fire. Thank you all for your hard work.

We also had a few members of the lodge come up to the camp to participate in our summer fellowship. They enjoyed the ride in on the skunk train and numerous activities that the camp provides. Thank you to everyone who participated in the fellowship.

2017 National Jamboree

Tyler W.

I had an amazing time at Jamboree. There were so many things to do and not enough time to do it. Between meeting people, patch trading, program activities, and the shows we kept busy the whole time. I got to meet one of the Arrowmen I became friends with, who is from Maine, at OA NEXT last year. It was great to catch up with him and see that the bond of our brotherhood carries across the country. I had the great honor of meeting Arrowman, Eagle Scout, and astronaut, Mike Fossum. We also had an Eagle Court of Honor with the National Key-Three for those of us who obtained the rank of Eagle before Jamboree. (This CoH was for 8 members of the Marin and Redwood Empire contingents. The Rank of Eagle was presented to Tyler W., Daniel A., and Stephen S. of Orca Lodge) This was an amazing experience and I am so honored to have been a part of it.

12 members of Orca Lodge were a part of the REC Jamboree contingent, along with 7 other Lodge members serving in various roles of the National Jamboree staff.

Passing of a Friend

OBITUARY: David Lee Dukeman, 1945-2017  (Former Orca Lodge Adviser)

David Lee Dukeman, age 71, of Eureka, passed away peacefully in his home on Sunday, May 21, 2017, surrounded by his wife and sons, after a battle with lung cancer.

David was born September 12, 1945 in Pensacola, Florida, to Walter and Elizabeth Dukeman, where his father was stationed with the US Air Force. His family moved to Lawndale, California in 1952, where he attended and graduated Leuzinger High School in 1963. He married Rosemary (DiVitorrio) Dukeman on August 17, 1975. They were married for 41 years and raised two sons together, Matthew and Daniel.

David is an Eagle Scout with three palms and a Silver Beaver recipient. He also is a recipient of the Order of the Arrow's Vigil Honor, Founder's Award and Centurion Award recipient. He continued to be an active member of the Boy Scouts of America and the Order of the Arrow throughout his life. He worked in the college bookstore business at El Camino Community College, Long Beach Community College, UCLA, and served as manager of the College of the Redwoods Bookstore for 25 years. He also worked for more than 35 years as a small engine mechanic at Western Chainsaw in Eureka, which he always considered to be his fun job.

David enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and spending time with his sons and friends at various Scouting events through the years. He has been involved with Troop 27 in Eureka for many years and enjoyed spending time at Camp Riggs in Elk River working on various projects. He was a mentor to many young men through the Scouting programs.

Dave was an active member of Orca Lodge from the beginning. As a Chapter Adviser of Mow-A-Toc Chapter, the 4th Orca Lodge Adviser, and as Section W-3B and W-3N Trading Post Adviser, Dave was an integral part of the operation of our Lodge. He was a mentor to many of our Arrowmen on their journey to Lodge and Section offices. Over the years, he still was a great resource to the Lodge advisers that succeeded him.

On July 8, a group of our Arrowmen journeyed up to Eureka to remember the life of Dave. Many of us hadn't made this trip since the Council realignment back in 2012. However, Dave continued to come down and participate as a member of Orca Lodge. Thank you to all who attended and to all who shared memories.
