Calling all Arrowmen
We are coming up fast to the Fall Induction. Come make a new friend and
help us widen the circle of the order. It is crucial to have as many
Arrowmen there to help staff this event to give our candidates the great
experience that you have all had. The Fall Induction will be held At camp
Royeneh on October 5-7.
During the induction, we will also be doing brotherhood conversions for those
who are eligible.

Section W-3N Conclave

The 2018 Section W-3N Conclave WHERE: Camp Sierra Pines THEME: Step into Fellowship Conclave is an annual meeting of council delegates from Order of the Arrow lodges and one of the premier Scouting events of the year! Conclave is intended to assist councils in developing and delivering more effective programs to support the overall mission of the Order of the Arrow. All 5 Lodges from Section W-3N will gather at Camp Sierra Pines September 14-16 for a weekend full of fun, fellowship, shows, service, and more! Arrowmen will have opportunities to collaborate with Arrowmen from around the region and nation. When is it? This year the Section W-3N Conclave will be September 14th-16th, 2018 at Camp Sierra Pines (7169 Sierra Pines Rd, Twin Bridges, CA 95721). Will There be Food? Yes! Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be provided Saturday alongside breakfast Sunday. In addition, both Friday and Saturday night Arrowmen will have an opportunity to attend our themed cracker barrels which will both have fantastic food to keep our bellies full through the weekend. For our hungrier members, the trading post will have a variety of snacks for purchase throughout the weekend. Where Will Arrowmen be Sleeping? Arrowmen will have the option of either camping in tents in the forest surrounding the main lodge or upgrading to a cabin . Camp Sierra Pines is known for its scenery and its lack of light pollution. Alongside the magnificent trees, this lends itself nicely to a beautiful and scenic Sierra camping experience! What Can Arrowmen Do at Conclave? Conclave provides Arrowmen from around Section W-3N to come together for a weekend of learning, service, and fellowship. Come make friends from all across northern California and Nevada as we step into fellowship and explore the bright future of the Order of the Arrow. This year, Arrowmen will be able to indulge in a number of different activities for the adventurer in every scout. We are offering innovative and informative training options this year. Delegates have the opportunity for fellowship and networking, to learn how to be more effective lodge leaders, to better understand ceremonies, and to learn about how other Section W-3N lodges operate. From the moment breakfast starts until the end of our Saturday night cracker barrel, Arrowmen will always have something to do and new experiences to explore. As a special treat this year, you will have the opportunity to meet Anthony Peluso, the National Chief of the Order of the Arrow. Where is Conclave? NLS & DYLC The National Leadership Seminar (NLS) is a weekend training program focusing on leadership development. Run by the Region Chief and his Advisers, it provides an in-depth look at leadership skills and techniques. An NLS discusses how these skills can be applied in your role in the OA and in other aspects of your life. The National Leadership Seminar is a weekend conference on the skills and attributes of leadership. It is intended primarily to enhance the leadership skills of the Order of the Arrow’s key youth and adult members as they seek to improve their services to the Boy Scouts of America and the greater community. Near the end of the seminar, participants make a contract with themselves to apply the skills studied in the seminar on projects in their lodge, council, and community.
Registration will begin at 5:00 p.m. Friday evening. First NLS session will start promptly at 8:00 p.m. and the first DYLC session will start promptly at 7:30 pm. The seminar will conclude at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon after a closing recognition banquet lunch. Participation for the entire weekend through Sunday is required for recognition of completion of the NLS and DYLC courses; please do not register unless you are committed to attending Friday evening through Sunday in entirety. Adults age 21 and older are eligible to attend the Developing Youth Leadership Conference (DYLC) and do not necessarily need to have previously attended NLS but it is recommended. Adults who are currently or will soon hold a lodge-level or chapter-level adviser position are encouraged to attend DYLC. The NLS training is open to anyone seeking to hone their leadership skills applicable to Scouting as well as daily life. Adults who are unsure which might be best for them should talk to their lodge adviser for guidance or e-mail training@western.oa-bsa.org.

National Order of the Arrow Conference
Erik C. - Section W-3N Vice Chief

The National Order of the Arrow Conference (NOAC) was a once and a life time
experience for a lot of the first timers from our contingent. In our contingent
we had a presence from all three chapters which made eight youth accompanied by
three adult leaders lead by the youth contingent lead Erik Carver and Mr.
Schoenthal the contingent leader. NOAC was held this year at Indiana University
in Bloomington which meant we toured Indianapolis for a couple days. While in
Indianapolis we went to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and took part in "Kissing
the Bricks." After this we decided to go to the Indianapolis Zoo and Indiana War
Memorial before attending dinner at The Old Spaghetti Factory. 
On Monday we arrived to Indiana University and unpacked in our dorm rooms. We
then met up with the rest of the Orca Lodge presence at the Opening Show. Then
throughout the week of NOAC the different members participated in many different
activates and trainings including; The Spartan Race, Wayfinder Festival, VIA
Luncheon, Experience Tent, and many other fun activities. Throughout NOAC
everyone participated in a little bit of patch trading and had an awesome time
there. I would recommend that if you have not yet gone to NOAC you do and if you
have gone try being on staff.
After leaving NOAC we went to the Dallara IndyCar Factory and toured that
building along with going to the Rhythm Discovery Center before departing for
home. This contingent contained two lodge officers, a section officer, two
chapter chiefs, four Eagle Scouts and future Eagles, and officers of our
chapters, lodge, and section.
Summer Fellowship at Noyo

Thank you to all the arrowmen who joined me at Camp Noyo for the lodge summer
fellowship. Our arrowmen devoted their weekends to assist council camp staff in
running webelos weekend and in preparing for boy scout resident camp. The lion?s
share of those efforts being targeted at restoring, rather, reclaiming the Camp
Noyo shotgun range from a forest of scotch broom. But, beyond the fifty service
hours we donated to help clean up the range, your presence alone is enough to
make an impression upon the webelos and un-inducted boy scouts. The more we
stand out as the youth face of the council, the better our efforts and the
community will be served.
Of course being a fellowship, the weekend was not all service projects and camp
staffing; we all got to spend a fair amount of time on the rifle and archery
ranges too. Our boy scout members took the .22's for a spin but it was our
venture scouts that really got to indulge. If field sports are your thing, you
might consider getting chartered with your local crew especially due to this
next bit of news.
Looking forward, I am working with council shooting sports to create an annual
spring fellowship for the lodge. This would be a day event that gives orca
arrowmen time on archery, shotgun, and rifle ranges. Currently we are looking at
mid-may of 2019 to inaugurate this standing event so that we can cater to newly
inducted arrowmen and general membership. This event will include opportunities
at higher calibers and hand guns for our registered and trained venturers. Keep

Hello All, I hope you all had a great summer and are all doing well. I challenge you all to go to Conclave this year, it will be a great event and you can meet so many knew people, including the National Chief! We have the annual lodge dinner coming up one November 3rd. We will be holding the elections for the four youth officers, so if you are interested in any of these, please let me know. Elections in Crews & Ships
On May 23, 2018 the National Order of the Arrow Committee approved some exciting
updates to the Order of the Arrow program.
Beginning February 1, 2019, unit elections will be permitted in
Scouts BSA, Venturing and Sea Scout units. The new Order of the Arrow membership
requirements are as follows:

Be a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America.
-
Have experienced 15 nights of camping while registered with a troop, crew, or
ship within the two years immediately prior to the election. The 15 nights must
include one, but no more than one, long-term camp consisting of at least five
consecutive nights of overnight camping, approved and under the auspices and
standards of the Boy Scouts of America. Only five nights of the long-term camp
may be credited toward the 15-night camping requirement; the balance of the
camping (10 nights) must be overnight, weekend, or other short-term camps of, at
most, three nights each. Ship nights may be counted as camping for Sea Scouts.

At the time of their election, youth must be under the age of 21, hold the
Scouts BSA First Class rank, the Venturing Discovery Award, or the Sea Scout
Ordinary rank or higher, and following approval by the Scoutmaster, Crew Advisor
or Sea Scout Skipper, be elected by the youth members of their unit.
-
Adults (age 21 or older) who meet the camping requirements may be selected
following nomination to and approval by the lodge adult selection committee.
Our commitment to our unchanging mission and purpose remains steadfast, and we
are excited to welcome others who share that commitment by extending membership
in Scouting's National Honor Society to participants of all older youth programs.
We look forward to having female members in 2019 and know that, like all of our
OA members, they will serve as role models and inspirations to others - both
within the Boy Scouts of America and beyond.
We anticipate that you may have some questions. Please be sure to read the FAQ
section below. We will have more information at the National
Order of the Arrow Conference , which will be held July 30 - August 4, 2018,
and we will continue to release additional information as it becomes available
in order to assist our lodges with implementation.
We look forward to sharing what the OA has to offer with more young people and
appreciate your support of this exciting new direction.
FAQs Q. Will camping be counted retroactively for those currently
in Venturing and Sea Scouts?
Yes. Camping that has taken place within the two years immediately prior to the
election will be counted beginning February 1, 2019. This camping must have
taken place while an individual was registered with the BSA as a program
participant and must be while participating with a BSA Venturing Crew or Sea
Scout Ship.
Q. Can I be elected into the OA if I am over the age of 18?
Yes. As long as you are under the age of 21 at the time the election is held. If
you are over 21, you will need to go through the adult selection process.
Q. Will there be any opportunities for Venturers to learn more about the OA
and Venturing?
Yes. We will provide high-level information and the opportunity to gather
feedback from youth Venturing participants at VenturingFest
2018 , which will be held July 1-6, 2018.
Q. When will the OA literature be updated to reflect these changes?
We are planning that all literature will be updated by Summer of 2019.
Q. Will we still be able to wear lodge flaps on any female uniforms that may
be created?
Yes. We continue to work with BSA National Supply to help ensure that the
current OA lodge flap shape and size will be accommodated.
New Lodge Flap
Due to the loss of all of the Orca Lodge patches in the Tubbs fire on October 9,
2017, the Lodge has introduced a new Lodge Flap. The new Lodge Flap was
designed by Rudy L. in the Miwok Chapter. This is the first youth designed
patch that we have had in many years. We have the WWW ghosted in the
clouds, the Fleur-d-lis ghosted in the tree trunk (representing Redwood Empire
Council). This new patch is available at all Lodge events. Thank you Rudy
for your design & Donna for your guidance thru the design process.

Miwok Miwok District
Rudy L. - Miwok Chapter Chief
Ahoy! Here's your trademarked report on the happenings of the Miwok Chapter! We've
been having a pretty good run these last few months. Our great team of officers
successfully reached out to every troop in our chapter for elections, and got
roughly fifteen to twenty brave young scouts elected into our noble brotherhood.
Now to get them inducted. Our next endeavor is the Winter Fellowship we have
planned in December. Hosted at Loon Lake from December 7 through 9, the Miwok
chapter is inviting the rest of the lodge for a weekend filled with fellowship,
adventure, and living the high ideals of scouting to its fullest (and hopefully
pirate booty). More details to follow on what is sure to be a super duper
weekend. Hope to see y'all there! That's all we've got for our Brothers of the
Orca Lodge.

The Wonk A Tonk Chapter has participated in two events recently. Several members
attended the fellowship at Noyo where we cleaned up a bit of scotch broom at the
shooting range. We had time to shoot and we also helped staff Webelos weekend.
We also had members from our lodge to to this years National Order of the Arrow
Conference where they had the opportunity to take trainings and seminars. They
also attended shows which were all tied to the theme of deciding your destiny.
Another event coming up is the Fall Induction. This is a chance for the elected
scouts to join the order and for scouts already in the OA to help out.
25th Anniversary Patch Design Contest
2019 marks the 25th anniversary of our very own Orca Lodge #194. To commemorate
this auspicious number the lodge executive committee will be minting a brand new
lodge flap. Of course first we will need a design, so with that in mind we are
announcing a lodge wide flap design contest. Starting as of the publishing of
this newsletter we will be accepting submissions of lodge flap concepts until
Saturday, October 27. The selected concept will be announced and presented at
the Lodge dinner on Saturday, November 3.
There are some requirements for this contest including standard lodge flap
stipulations. The patch must:
-
Contain "Orca 194", "WWW", the BSA trademark, and the OA trademark.
-
Be a standard cut, one-piece flap.
-
Clearly identify itself as a 25th anniversary patch ("25th" or "1994-2019" or
etc...).
-
Contain at least an identifiable part of an Orca (e.g. a fin or tail).
-
Not contain any materials from Peanuts.
Submissions should be made to the lodge
treasurer, Brendan Sweeney. Further, anyone who has questions, has never
designed a lodge flap before, or does not have access to photo editing software,
should also reach out to the treasurer. We look forward to your submissions. For a listing of historical Orca Lodge patches, you can visit the Lodge History project . In addition, 2019 marks 100 years since the formation of the beginnings of what is currently Redwood Empire Council. In July of 1919, the Petaluma Area Council was chartered. The council will be marking this occasion & you may want to incorporate some Council History in your design as well
Adviser's Minute
2018 so far has been a year filled with fun and adventure for Orca lodge. We were at camp Wente for our spring induction, where we welcomed new members into our circle of brotherhood. In August, we sent 8 youth and 3 adults to NOAC at Indiana University. We learned and made new friends. We even had the opportunity to visit Phoenix, if for only for an hour. Our summer BBQ at the scout hut in Cotati was a great way to start off the fall. This brings us to conclave at Camp Sierra Pines. This will be a great time with our brothers from Section W3-N.
