Internet Rechartering - Frequently Asked Questions

Below is a list of commonly asked re-charter questions. Please take a moment to read these over to determine whether or not they may apply to your charter renewal.

When do I need to have my charter renewal finished by?

This is a very important question! Charters are due 15 days before the end of the current charter year (which is December 15 for all units in Redwood Empire Council BSA).

A quick and efficient completion depends on your unit’s ability to gather information and fees quickly, gather signatures, and return it to your district representative.

What if I don't get the charter renewal in on time?

Units with late charters suffer a number of problems. First, their unit is no longer covered by the BSA insurance coverage. This means that your leaders could be liable in the event of an accident. Second, youth advancements cannot be recorded through the National BSA records (ScoutNET and Scoutbook software). Third, magazine subscriptions of Boys' Life and Scouting will lapse (and it takes a full two months for these periodicals to resume their circulation to your home). Finally, your unit will not be eligible for the Journey to Excellence Award - an important distinction and an indication that you are bringing the best possible program to your unit’s youth.

What is a chartered organization?

A Chartered Organization is a religious, civic, or community organization that chooses to sponsor a Scout pack, troop, team, and/or crew.  Each organization partners with Scouting, utilizing the Annual Charter Agreement Form with the end goal of helping to develop strong and successful men and women. Examples of chartered organizations include churches, synagogues, temples, community groups, fraternal groups, service clubs, and even businesses.

Who is the executive officer of my chartered organization?

Your Executive Officer is listed on the top of your charter renewal roster. This Executive Officer is the "head of the chartered organization" but in many cases, is not also a BSA member.  He/she appoints a Chartered Organization Representative to be the liaison to the BSA units, and to represent the organization in both the council and the local district.  BSA suggests that each unit regularly meet with their Executive Officer to discuss the program, upcoming events, and opportunities to strengthen their partnership.
